Hello Parents!

September 8, 2011

Dear Parents,

Hello, my name is Ms. Smith and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this year.  I am thrilled to have your children in my class and would like to take a moment to discuss how we can work together to ensure a productive and successful school year.

As many of you have probably know, second grade is a transitional year which can be challenging for children. Students will be expected to be more independent and take more responsibility for their learning and their work.  The children will need a lot of support from home and school in order to feel well adjusted and able to take on the second grade curriculum.

The first few months of school are crucial in supporting your child and helping them develop good habits for the year.  Please review homework with them and check their folders and bookbags every single day.  Develop a homework routine and a place in the house for them to keep their schoolwork.  Help them prepare for their monthly tests and model good student habits.  This will also keep you informed about what is expected of them and how well they are doing in different subject areas.

There will be plenty of things we will need to discuss throughout the year.  I encourage your questions and involvement.  If you would like to speak to me or if you have a question, you can email me at MSmith25@schools.nyc.gov  or please write me a note in your child’s assignment pad and ask your child to show it to me.  You are also welcome to call the school at 718-377-7696 and leave a message and I will try to get back to you that day or the next.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.  This is going to be a wonderful year! Please send your child in with all of their supplies so we can get started on learning without delay.  I hope to see you at the orientation!

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                       Ms. Smith
